Delta expands connections to Europe’s top solar eclipse destinations

Additional Iceland flights and an extensive Spain network give travelers easier access to one of the decade’s most spectacular astronomical events

Delta Air Lines is expanding its transatlantic network ahead of the total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, making it easier for travelers to reach two of Europe’s premier viewing destinations. Additional flights to Iceland and year-round service to Spain will allow passengers to witness the rare celestial event against some of the continent’s most dramatic natural landscapes.

Extra Iceland flights for eclipse travelers

To meet expected demand, Delta is adding two additional flights from New York-JFK to Reykjavik on August 8 and 9, giving customers more opportunities to arrive in Iceland before the eclipse.

The path of totality will cross western Iceland, with Reykjavik serving as one of the most accessible viewing locations. Travelers can also head to destinations including the Westfjords, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, the Reykjanes Peninsula and Iceland’s southern coastline, where expansive horizons and minimal light pollution offer ideal viewing conditions.

From volcanic lava fields and black sand beaches to geothermal spas, Iceland provides a striking natural setting for experiencing totality.

Spain offers a rare "double sunset"

The eclipse will also sweep across the Iberian Peninsula from northwest to east, creating exceptional viewing opportunities throughout northern and eastern Spain.

Passengers can travel with Delta to Madrid or Barcelona, or fly to Porto or Lisbon before continuing to prime viewing areas across mainland Spain. Because the eclipse will occur late in the afternoon, observers will also witness the sunset shortly afterward, creating the rare phenomenon often described as a "double sunset."

Particularly favorable viewing conditions are expected along Spain’s northern coast, including the Galician provinces of A Coruña and Lugo.

Extensive transatlantic network

Delta operates daily nonstop flights from New York, Atlanta and Boston to both Madrid and Barcelona, while also offering three weekly flights between Seattle and Barcelona using Airbus A330-900neo and Boeing 767-300ER aircraft.

The airline also serves Lisbon and Porto daily from New York. The Porto route, Delta’s newest destination in Portugal, provides convenient access to northern Portugal as well as neighboring regions of northern Spain.

By combining additional capacity to Iceland with its extensive Iberian network, Delta aims to connect travelers with one of the most anticipated natural events of 2026, bringing together astronomy, nature and travel in two of Europe’s most scenic destinations.
