Market halls are among the most authentic gathering
places in any city, bringing together local residents, traders and visitors. A
new analysis by TUI has ranked more than 2,200 market halls and food markets
across 40 European countries using millions of Google Maps reviews. The
popularity score combines average ratings, the number of reviews and five-star
ratings to identify Europe's most popular markets.
Barcelona claims the top spot
Barcelona's Mercat de la Boqueria ranks first with a
popularity score of 10.488. Located on the famous La Rambla, the historic
market is renowned for its fresh seafood, seasonal fruit, regional delicacies
and lively atmosphere. More than 139,000 five-star reviews secured its position
as Europe's favourite market.
Second place goes to London's Camden Market with a
score of 10.476. Known for its international street food, vintage shops and
creative atmosphere, it remains one of the United Kingdom's best-known markets.
Istanbul's historic Spice Bazaar takes third place with a score of 10.433,
attracting visitors with its centuries-old trading tradition and the aromas of
saffron, cinnamon and tea.
Spain dominates the top rankings
Spain accounts for half of the markets in the top ten.
Alongside La Boqueria, the Central Market of Valencia ranks fourth, while
Valencia's Mercado Central takes fifth place. Madrid's Mercado de San Miguel
comes seventh, followed by Mercado de Atarazanas in Málaga in eighth place and
Mercat Central d'Alacant in Alicante in tenth.
The remaining top ten positions are occupied by
Borough Market in London, ranked sixth, and Budapest's Great Market Hall in
ninth place.
Markets offer an authentic local experience
According to TUI, market halls provide one of the best
ways to experience the everyday life of a destination. They are places where
local residents shop for fresh produce, restaurants source regional ingredients
and visitors discover local flavours and culinary traditions.
The study includes everything from historic food
markets to contemporary food halls, highlighting the important role these
venues play in preserving local culture while offering memorable gastronomic
experiences.
Southern Europe leads the way
The top 25 ranking shows a clear concentration of
highly rated markets in Southern Europe, with Spain represented by several
cities. At the same time, markets in the Baltic capitals of Tallinn and Riga,
as well as Belfast, also feature among Europe's favourites.
Overall, the top 25 markets are spread across ten
European countries, reflecting both the richness and diversity of market
culture throughout the continent.
For the ranking, TUI analysed more than 2,200 market
halls and food markets in 40 European countries, combining millions of Google
Maps reviews into a single Europe-wide popularity score.
