Food continues to be one of the strongest motivations
for travel, inspiring visitors to explore new destinations through local
flavours, culinary traditions and authentic dining experiences. Digital travel
platform Agoda has identified a selection of lesser-known destinations across
Asia where regional cuisine offers a deeper understanding of local culture and
history.
From royal recipes in Vietnam to borderland flavours
in China, these destinations showcase the diversity of Asia’s culinary heritage
while offering travellers experiences beyond the region’s best-known tourism
hubs.
Thailand’s Isan Region Serves Authentic Flavours
Udon Thani, located in northeastern Thailand, is known
for its vibrant street food culture and traditional Isan cuisine. Local
specialities such as som tam, a spicy green papaya salad, and larb, a minced
meat salad seasoned with herbs and spices, reflect the region’s strong
agricultural roots and distinctive culinary identity.
The city offers visitors an opportunity to experience
authentic rural Thai food traditions that have been preserved for generations.
Imperial Heritage on the Plate in Hué
Vietnam’s former imperial capital, Hué, remains one of
the country’s most distinctive food destinations. The city’s cuisine reflects
its historical role as the seat of the Nguyen Dynasty and is renowned for its
refined flavours and meticulous presentation.
Signature dishes include bánh bèo, delicate steamed
rice cakes, and bún bò Hué, the city’s famous spicy beef noodle soup, both of
which continue to showcase Hué’s royal culinary heritage.
Iloilo Blends Local and Global Influences
In the Philippines, Iloilo has developed a reputation
as one of the country’s most exciting food destinations. The city combines
local traditions with international influences, creating a rich and varied
culinary landscape.
Seafood plays a central role, alongside regional
favourites such as La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup, and pancit molo, a
dumpling-based soup that reflects the area’s multicultural heritage.
Dandong Bridges Chinese and Korean Cuisine
Situated on China’s border with North Korea, Dandong
offers a culinary scene shaped by centuries of cultural exchange. Chinese and
Korean influences come together in dishes that combine bold flavours with fresh
local ingredients.
The city’s restaurants serve a wide range of
traditional foods, from handmade dumplings to spicy stews, highlighting
Dandong’s role as a meeting point between two culinary traditions.
Melaka Celebrates Nyonya Heritage
Malaysia’s historic city of Melaka is famous for its
Nyonya cuisine, a culinary tradition that blends Chinese ingredients with Malay
spices and cooking techniques.
The result is a distinctive cuisine characterised by
aromatic flavours and complex recipes. Melaka’s food culture reflects the
city’s multicultural past and remains one of the strongest expressions of
Peranakan heritage in Southeast Asia.
Luang Prabang Preserves Culinary Traditions
The UNESCO-listed city of Luang Prabang in Laos offers
a unique combination of traditional Laotian cooking and French colonial
influences. Its food culture remains closely linked to local traditions and
ingredients.
Popular dishes include laap, a seasoned minced meat
salad, and tam mak hoong, a tangy green papaya salad. Together they represent a
culinary heritage that continues to play an important role in the city’s
cultural identity.
Food as a Gateway to Culture
“Exploring these hidden gems through their food is
like taking a delicious journey through history and culture,” said Andrew
Smith, Senior Vice President, Supply at Agoda. “Whether travellers are looking
to savour the spicy notes of Isan cuisine or indulge in Hué’s imperial
flavours, Agoda is thrilled to help travellers discover these unique
destinations and their culinary treasures.”
According to Agoda, culinary tourism continues to grow
as travellers increasingly seek meaningful experiences connected to local
culture. By highlighting destinations where food remains deeply rooted in
tradition, the platform aims to encourage travellers to look beyond the
region’s largest cities and discover new perspectives through local cuisine.
