Ahead of the International Day of Yoga on 21 June,
digital travel platform Agoda has highlighted a selection of destinations
across Asia that offer memorable yoga experiences. The recommended locations
range from India’s spiritual centres to the pristine islands of Southeast Asia,
providing opportunities for both beginners and experienced practitioners to
combine travel, wellness and cultural discovery.
Wellness travel continues to gain popularity as more
travellers seek meaningful experiences that nurture both body and mind. Yoga
retreats, meditation programmes and holistic wellness concepts are increasingly
becoming part of travel itineraries, particularly in destinations known for
their natural beauty and cultural heritage.
Rishikesh remains the spiritual heart of yoga
Located in the foothills of the Himalayas, Rishikesh
is widely regarded as the world's yoga capital. The town attracts visitors from
across the globe with its numerous ashrams, traditional teachings and spiritual
atmosphere.
In addition to yoga classes and retreats, travellers
can experience ceremonies along the sacred Ganges River and explore the
dramatic landscapes that surround the region.
Ubud combines wellness and Balinese culture
Surrounded by rice terraces and tropical forests, Ubud
has established itself as one of Asia’s leading wellness destinations. Yoga
retreats, meditation centres and holistic healing programmes are complemented
by a thriving arts scene and rich cultural traditions.
Visitors can combine wellness activities with
excursions to temples, galleries and local markets while enjoying Bali’s
renowned hospitality and cuisine.
Mysore attracts dedicated yoga practitioners
The southern Indian city of Mysore is considered the
birthplace of Ashtanga yoga and remains one of the most important destinations
for students of this discipline.
Alongside internationally recognised yoga schools, the
city offers historic attractions such as the Mysore Palace and a glimpse into
India’s royal heritage.
Thailand offers island and mountain retreats
Koh Phangan has evolved into one of Southeast Asia’s
best-known wellness destinations. The island’s yoga centres and retreats focus
on mindfulness, detox programmes and holistic wellbeing, all set against a
backdrop of beaches and tropical scenery.
Further north, Chiang Mai combines a peaceful mountain
setting with centuries-old cultural traditions. Yoga practitioners can choose
from a wide range of classes while exploring temples, local festivals and the
distinctive cuisine of northern Thailand.
Palawan offers yoga amid pristine nature
In the Philippines, Palawan provides a tranquil
setting for yoga and relaxation. Frequently ranked among the world's most
beautiful islands, it combines crystal-clear waters, white-sand beaches and
lush landscapes with a growing selection of wellness retreats.
Beyond yoga, visitors can explore coral reefs, hidden
lagoons and some of Southeast Asia’s most spectacular coastal scenery.
Growing demand for wellness travel
“Traveling for wellness is a growing interest, and
Asia offers a wealth of destinations for those seeking enriching yoga
experiences,” said Andrew Smith, Senior Vice President Supply at Agoda.
“From the spiritual depths of Rishikesh to the lush
retreats of Ubud and the serene beaches of Palawan, these destinations provide
the perfect backdrop for both yoga practice and exploration.”
According to Agoda, travellers are increasingly
combining wellness experiences with cultural discovery and outdoor activities.
The company currently offers access to more than six million accommodation
options, over 130,000 flight routes and more than 300,000 bookable activities
worldwide.
