Virgin Atlantic launches direct London–Phuket flights for winter 2026/27

Virgin Atlantic has inaugurated its new nonstop service between London Heathrow and Phuket, adding direct capacity between the United Kingdom and one of Thailand’s most popular holiday destinations. The first flight departed London on October 18 and arrived in Phuket on October 19, marking the beginning of a seasonal operation scheduled to continue until March 26, 2027.

The airline will operate three flights per week during the British winter season, using aircraft with 258 seats. This represents 774 inbound seats per week and provides an additional option for British holidaymakers seeking direct access to southern Thailand. The inaugural flight was fully booked, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

The new connection forms part of a broader effort to strengthen Thailand’s position in the British long-haul leisure market. TAT and Virgin Atlantic have supported the launch with a joint marketing campaign targeting winter departures, while travel agent familiarisation activities are intended to encourage sales through the UK travel trade. The initiative also reflects Thailand’s strategy of attracting visitors who stay longer, spend more and explore destinations beyond the main resort areas.

New capacity supported by travel trade promotion

Flights depart London Heathrow on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 15:45, arriving in Phuket at 09:55 the following morning. Return services operate on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, departing Phuket at 11:45 and arriving in London at 19:25. All times are local.

The route complements existing nonstop connections between Britain and Thailand. Thai Airways and EVA Air together operate 21 weekly flights between London Heathrow and Bangkok, while British Airways, TUI and Norse Atlantic Airways offer additional seasonal services from London Gatwick and Manchester.

To support the new route, TAT's London office and Virgin Atlantic developed a marketing campaign combining digital advertising, email promotions, travel agency displays and activities through Virgin Atlantic Holidays.

According to TAT, the campaign generated 9,079 bookings on the Heathrow–Phuket route and at least 5.41 million audience exposures. These figures indicate substantial initial interest, although the tourism authority has not specified the proportion of bookings attributable directly to individual promotional activities.

The inaugural flight also carried 29 representatives of Barrhead Travel, led by Managing Director Nicki Tempest-Mitchell. Their visit formed part of TAT's Joint Agent: Top Sellers familiarisation programme, designed to strengthen destination knowledge among British travel sellers.

The programme gives participating agents first-hand experience of Thai tourism products, enabling them to provide more detailed advice to customers and promote destinations beyond Phuket.

UK visitors generate significant tourism revenue

The United Kingdom ranks among Thailand's five largest tourism markets by revenue, making additional direct air connections particularly valuable for the country's tourism industry.

In 2025, arrivals from Britain exceeded one million for the first time, generating tourism revenue of 74.52 billion baht, an increase of 21.7 percent compared with the previous year.

Between January 1 and September 3, 2026, Thailand welcomed 682,684 visitors from the UK. According to TAT, demand was showing signs of improvement ahead of the winter travel season.

British travelers spend an average of 14.18 days in Thailand, with expenditure reaching approximately 61,615 baht per person per trip. First-time visitors account for 56.99 percent of the market, while returning travelers represent 43.01 percent.

These characteristics make the UK an important market for hotels, tour operators and businesses offering multi-destination holidays, cultural experiences and higher-value tourism products.

Chiravadee Khunsub, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing covering Europe, the Americas, the Middle East and Africa, said the new service would support Thailand's strategy of prioritising tourism value rather than visitor numbers alone.

“Virgin Atlantic’s new service gives UK travellers greater access to Phuket during the winter season. Under TAT’s Airline Focus and Value over Volume directions, we are working with airline and travel trade partners to convert additional flight capacity into high-value tourism.”

Opportunities beyond Phuket

Although Phuket is the immediate destination of the new flights, Thailand's tourism authorities are also seeking to distribute the economic benefits of international arrivals more widely.

British visitors regularly combine coastal holidays with cultural experiences, gastronomy, wellness and nature-based activities. Popular destinations include Bangkok, Krabi, Surat Thani and Chiang Mai, alongside Phuket itself.

The direct Heathrow connection could therefore support travel products combining Phuket with neighbouring provinces and other parts of southern Thailand. Local accommodation providers, excursion operators and destination management companies may benefit if the additional air capacity translates into longer stays and multi-centre itineraries.

For British travel agents, the combination of nonstop flights, established tourism infrastructure and opportunities for regional exploration provides additional flexibility when designing winter holidays.

The new service also reinforces Phuket's position as an international gateway to southern Thailand, while the accompanying marketing and familiarisation programmes demonstrate the importance of cooperation between airlines, tourism authorities and travel distributors in developing long-haul demand.
