Thailand is strengthening the link between its film industry and international tourism. At the Toronto International Film Festival 2026, the Tourism Authority of Thailand presented the country both as a location for international productions and as a destination capable of turning places seen on screen into future travel experiences.

Under the theme “Amazing Location Thailand: From Scene to Scenic”, TAT participated in TIFF activities from 10 to 16 September. The programme targeted filmmakers, producers and other industry professionals and combined information about Thailand’s production capabilities with its landscapes, culture and local communities.

For the tourism industry, the strategy has two objectives: attracting more international film productions to Thailand and using films and other screen content to stimulate demand for destinations featured in those productions.

Ten filming routes presented to international producers

At the TIFF 2026 Market, TAT showcased ten curated filming routes across Thailand. They combine potential shooting locations with cultural attractions, communities and local experiences.

The concept is designed to demonstrate that locations can serve two purposes. They provide settings for international film productions while subsequently becoming destinations that audiences may want to visit themselves.

TAT sees this connection as an opportunity to generate additional business for tourism companies and local communities. Film tourism forms part of the authority’s broader Sub-Culture Economy strategy within its Amazing 5 Economy framework.

Thailand highlights its production infrastructure

The campaign goes beyond conventional destination marketing. Thailand also used TIFF to present the practical conditions available to international productions, including experienced personnel, infrastructure and production facilities.

TAT worked alongside the Department of International Trade Promotion and the Thailand Film Office. The joint presence was intended to give producers and filmmakers a broader picture of the services and support available when shooting in the country.

An industry panel explored how Thailand’s landscapes, communities, culture and everyday life can become elements of storytelling rather than merely serving as visual backgrounds. A separate Variety Studio interview extended the campaign beyond visitors attending the festival itself.

Networking targets international film industry

Direct contacts with decision-makers were another element of the Toronto programme. More than 50 film and entertainment professionals attended a networking reception where Thailand presented its locations, production environment and opportunities for future projects.

The combination of trade fair presence, industry discussions, media activities and networking reflects TAT’s attempt to address the film business as a tourism distribution channel in its own right.

Successful international productions can give destinations worldwide visibility without relying exclusively on conventional advertising. Locations associated with films and television productions can subsequently become attractions and provide starting points for tours, excursions and themed travel products.

From filming location to bookable experience

Thailand already offers a wide range of landscapes within comparatively short distances, from major cities and tropical islands to beaches, mountains, historic sites and rural communities. TAT wants international filmmakers to consider this diversity during production planning while encouraging the tourism industry to turn resulting screen exposure into travel demand.

The “From Scene to Scenic” approach therefore links two economic effects that traditionally have often been considered separately: expenditure generated by international productions while filming in Thailand and subsequent tourism generated by audiences interested in experiencing the locations themselves.
