Malaysia will host Seatrade Cruise Asia 2026 for the first time, bringing together senior cruise executives, destination representatives and industry specialists to examine the future of cruising across the region. The event will take place in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, with the main conference programme scheduled for 16–18 November. Organisers expect participation from more than 28 major cruise lines and representatives of approximately 30 countries.
Under the theme A New Era of Opportunity, the conference will address the opportunities and challenges facing an Asian cruise market characterised by different stages of development across individual destinations and source markets. Discussions will focus on cruise deployment, year-round operations, homeport development and the infrastructure needed to accommodate future growth.
The programme will also examine changing passenger expectations, the development of cruise experiences tailored to Asian markets and the ability of destinations to accommodate both large cruise vessels and smaller ships. For ports and tourism authorities, the discussions will cover practical questions ranging from terminal facilities and passenger processing to the organisation of shore experiences.
Cruise executives assess regional growth
Charles ‘Bud’ Darr, President and CEO of Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), will deliver the opening keynote on 16 November at 1:30 pm. His address will examine how the region can translate emerging opportunities into lasting industry development.
“Seatrade Cruise Asia brings the talent and experience of the Asia-Pacific cruise industry together with leaders from around the world. Here, we can think boldly about the decades ahead, learn from one another, and find the partners to put ambitious ideas into practice,” Darr said.
The keynote will be followed by a senior executive discussion entitled State of Asia’s Cruise Industry: A New Era of Opportunity, beginning at 1:45 pm and moderated by Mary Bond, Group Portfolio Director at Seatrade Cruise.
Participants will include Ben Bouldin, President, Greater China and Managing Director, Asia, at Royal Caribbean International; Michael Goh, President of StarDream Cruises; and Oliviero Morelli, MSC Group’s Cruise Division President for South-East Asia, Japan and South Korea.
The executives will discuss their companies’ strategic priorities, regional deployment decisions and expectations for the development of Asian cruise markets.
Although opportunities are emerging across passenger source markets, destinations and cruise products, growth remains uneven. The industry faces decisions about where to invest, which itineraries to develop and how to ensure that ports and destinations can support expanded operations.
Ports and destinations under discussion
A significant part of the conference programme will focus on the infrastructure and operational requirements associated with cruise development.
Homeporting and year-round cruise operations are among the principal topics. These discussions will examine how destinations can support ships that begin and end voyages locally, alongside the broader requirements of regular cruise calls.
Another focus will be the passenger journey through terminals, including customs, immigration and quarantine procedures, commonly referred to as CIQ. Efficient coordination of these services is an important consideration for cruise lines when assessing port operations.
Destination experiences will also feature prominently. Sessions on destination immersion and small-ship readiness will explore how ports and tourism businesses can respond to different vessel types and passenger interests.
The programme reflects the range of organisations involved in cruise tourism, from shipping companies and port authorities to destination management organisations and local tourism providers.
Conference registration and Penang excursion
The conference programme on 17 and 18 November is open to international industry delegates, with registration prices starting at US$1,000. Malaysian residents are eligible for a discounted rate of US$450 upon presentation of valid identification.
Cruise line executives can attend free of charge using a promotional code provided by the organisers.
An additional excursion to Penang is available for US$450 and can be added to any conference pass.
By holding the event in Kuala Lumpur and Penang for the first time, Seatrade Cruise Asia is bringing its discussions to Malaysia as the regional cruise industry considers future investment, destination development and new opportunities for international cooperation.
