Club Med is returning to the United States through the
redevelopment of the historic Carambola Beach Resort on St. Croix in the U.S.
Virgin Islands. The project, developed in partnership with real estate
investment trust VICI Properties, will transform the iconic beachfront property
into a premium all-inclusive resort under Club Med’s Exclusive Collection
brand.
The redevelopment marks a significant milestone in
Club Med’s North American growth strategy and represents the company’s first
resort on U.S. soil in many years. Construction is expected to begin in summer
2026, with the reopening scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2027.
Partnership combines hospitality expertise and
investment
The project is being developed through a long-term
partnership between Club Med and VICI Properties. Following its acquisition of
the Carambola Beach Resort, VICI entered into a long-term lease agreement with
Club Med and will finance the redevelopment of the property.
Once completed, Club Med will operate the resort,
which currently features 150 guestrooms. The redevelopment will elevate the
property to the standards of the Exclusive Collection, the company’s
highest-tier portfolio of premium all-inclusive resorts.
“The U.S. Virgin Islands represent an exciting new
chapter for Club Med,” said Carolyne Doyon, President and CEO of Club Med North
America and the Caribbean.
“With St. Croix's natural beauty, strong community
spirit, and deep cultural roots, together with the longstanding legacy of this
hotel, this project reflects our vision for thoughtful growth and meaningful
connection across the Americas.”
Historic resort enters a new era
Originally built in 1986 by philanthropist and
conservationist Laurance Rockefeller, Carambola Beach Resort occupies a unique
setting between a tropical rainforest and a crescent-shaped beach on the
island’s north coast.
The redevelopment plans aim to preserve the property's
historical character and natural surroundings while introducing modern design,
upgraded facilities and enhanced guest experiences.
The future resort will become part of Club Med’s
Exclusive Collection, which focuses on high-end all-inclusive experiences,
personalised service and distinctive destinations.
Economic benefits for St. Croix
Beyond tourism, the project is expected to make a
significant contribution to the local economy. According to current
projections, the redevelopment and subsequent operation of the resort will
create approximately 200 direct jobs, with at least as many indirect employment
opportunities generated through supporting industries.
The resort is also expected to strengthen partnerships
with local excursion providers, farmers, artisans and service companies,
helping to spread tourism-related benefits throughout the wider community.
Governor Albert Bryan Jr. welcomed the investment,
describing it as an important step in the continued development of the U.S.
Virgin Islands’ tourism sector.
“The arrival of the Club Med brand to the U.S. Virgin
Islands marks another significant milestone in the continued economic growth
and revitalization of our islands — particularly St. Croix,” he said.
Focus on sustainability and community engagement
Sustainability forms a central part of the
redevelopment strategy. The project aims to achieve both BREEAM and Green Globe
certifications, reflecting commitments to environmentally responsible design
and operations.
The initiative also aligns with Club Med’s global
sustainability programme, Happy to Care, which focuses on environmental
stewardship and community engagement.
Discussions between the company and local authorities
have highlighted priorities including workforce development, education, local
employment opportunities and responsible tourism growth.
Strategic expansion in North America
For Club Med, the St. Croix project represents more
than the reopening of a single resort. It signals the company’s renewed
commitment to expanding its presence in North America and strengthening its
position in the premium all-inclusive market.
The resort is expected to attract guests from the
United States, Canada and international markets seeking a high-quality
Caribbean holiday experience that combines luxury, culture, nature and
sustainability.
With construction set to begin later this year, Club
Med St. Croix is poised to become one of the most significant tourism
investments in the U.S. Virgin Islands in recent years and a flagship addition
to the brand’s growing North American portfolio.
